Coaching and Consulting are similar, yet distinct.  As a business consultant, I come to the partnership as an expert, whether it is in small business marketing, web design, strategy planning and alignment, organizational effectiveness or workforce development and management.  I provide and teach you proven skills, like process improvement techniques, performance evaluation methodologies, leadership development, better time management or better Internet marketing techniques, etc.  After careful discussion and analysis of what results you're looking to achieve, we create a plan of action for you to move forward on your important projects.  The focus of consulting is to get a project done that will enhance your business. 


The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as "an ongoing partnership that helps clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Through the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their performance, and enhance their quality of life."


Coaching is the feedback process that functions as a mirror, allowing self-examination and self-correction, resulting in greater accountability, achievement and fulfillment.

Ideas of things to look at when considering bringing coaching into your organization:

§          What result is your company looking for?

§          What do you want to be different?

§          What is the impact you are looking for?

§          How will that desired impact be maintained?

§          How will you know when the desired impact is reached?

§          What tools will be used to measure the success of the program?

§          What does success look like?

§          How will you enroll and support your employees?

§          How committed are you?

Analogy of how Coaching and Consulting are distinct: 

§          Coach to help you learn to ride a bicycle - The coach would help you get up on the bicycle and then encourage, endorse, acknowledge and support you while running alongside until you felt comfortable enough to go it alone.  A business coach will help you understand how and why you ride a bicycle, help you to determine what's holding you back from riding properly, and jog along next to you as YOU ride. 

§          Consultant to help you learn to ride a bicycle - A business consultant will explain why one bike is superior to another, teach you how to ride the bike, and if desired or necessary, ride the bike for you.  The consultant would bring you a bicycle manual and tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the workings of a bicycle. The consultant would then depart and return six months later to see how you were doing.

 Example: Steps to one-on-one strategy coaching:

§          Client starts the self-discovery process by answering a New Client Questionnaire

§          We then start to identify values, gifts, motivators, drainers

§          Clarify what is important and make meaningful goals

§          Find the strategies and solutions that work for and inspire client

§          Measure where the client is in relationship to her/his goals

§          Identify next steps and client makes commitment on what he/she is going to work on 

§          Coach holds the client accountable and holds the focus on client’s agenda creating momentum.

 Coach's Commitments

§          Be knowledgeable in a broad range of assessment methodologies.

§          Administer those instruments for which we have been fully trained/certified or otherwise adequately prepared.

§          Maintain the confidentiality of the executive/client by protecting the assessment data 
and shared conversations.

§          Provide a safe, supportive environment in which to deliver assessment feedback in ways that encourage them to act upon their assessment by creating a development action plan.

§          Adhere to the standards and guidelines for practice outlined in the ICF Code of Ethics.

§          Maintain the coaching focus on the client’s/executive’s goals.

§          Prepare relevant action items for all coaching meetings.

§          Role-model effective leadership practices.

§          Ask relevant, insightful questions that promote transformational conversations and clear 
action steps during coaching sessions.

§          Offer truthful and relevant feedback.

§          Create an environment that supports exploration and change.

§          Make appropriate referrals to other resources when you are not the best source for additional assistance.
