Are You Living the Life of a Whole Person?

Who are the people you most admire?  Are they somehow more authentic, complete, whole than you? What makes this difference?  Are some people really living the whole life?  Are they experiencing and being more ALIVE – full of energy, joy, peace, contentment, wisdom – living true to themselves  – living a life that can be described as a Life of “Abundance”……

This article is going to explore the characteristics of this “whole person” - the ones who live life fully alive experiencing abundance.  This article will only scratch the surface, but hopefully it will tickle your curiosity and stir a passion in you to “Go for IT”!

When you step back and ask what do these individuals have in common, some of the characteristics that come to mind for me are:

  1. They know their answers to Key Questions which Guide their Lives  – In other words, they truly know and accept themselves!
  2. They have a value system that follows age-old Higher Principles of Life
  3. They take care of themselves – “Whole self” – Spiritually, Mentally, Emotionally, Physically, Socially
  4. They live consistently within this value system – Integrity and Congruence – Being TRUE!
  5. What you see is what you get – no Masks or Duplicity – Being REAL!
  6. They have a solid confidence, internal; that is also humble – Surrendered and Aware!
  7. They take risks – live with the courage to be vulnerable and to challenge themselves to Grow/Change – Transform!
  8. They positively affect others with their presence – energy, vitality, being transparent, WHOLE!

There are many important questions for each of us to explore to discover our true selves.  The real issue here is our willingness to ask ourselves these questions!

These powerful questions seem to scare some of us to the point we would rather DO just about anything to avoid facing ourselves and that is what often happens – we hide in the “doing” or “busyness” of life to avoid getting to know ourselves.  To quote Dick Leider, the author of The Power of Purpose, “Life begins with questions and nothing shapes our lives as much as the questions we ask – or refuse to ask – throughout our lives.” Granted some personalities are at the opposite end; these individuals actually thrive on seeking the answers to these big questions of life - and may get so lost in finding themselves that they never fulfill what is their discovered PURPOSE!  So just to spark some fire in you OR possibly strike the cord that reveals you’re running from yourself and your answers – here are a list of key questions for you to consider.  Do you have your answers?

1. Key Questions which Guide their Lives:

Why am I doing what I am doing?   It is my passion – my life purpose!

*   Where is there meaning in my life?  When am I satisfied & fulfilled?  What brings wholeness in my life?

*   What is my reason for being?  What is my life-purpose?  What is my life’s mission/vision?

*   What is really important to me?   What do I value?  What makes my heart sing?

*   Who am I?  What are my values?  What are my unique strengths, giftings and talents?

How do I integrate my spirituality into my every day life?   How do I serve?

“This above all: to thine own self be true“

-- William Shakespeare

So what is a " value system" that follows age-old higher principles of life?  Here I must highly recommend a wonderful little book so packed with wisdom around the key principles governing life titled, “If Life is a Game, These are the Rules”, by Cherie Carter-Scott, Ph.D.  This book expresses in such a simple way, profound truths that everyone, young and old, would benefit from reading this little book and sharing it with others.  Basically, your value system is what guides your everyday choices and behaviors, but often we are in an internal conflict - we are not living consistently with what we want to be our values.  Below is a VERY small list of thought-provoking examples of important higher principles of life for you to begin to ponder whether they are part of your everyday value system and are the principles that govern your choices and actions:

2. Higher Principles of Life (a few of my favorites...)

*   Giving – It is more blessed to give than to receive – “Pay It Forward”

*   Loving – Treat others the way you want to be treated – Love your neighbor as yourself

*   Harvesting - We reap what we sow – “like attracts like” – like produces after its own kind

*   Reflection – Our Life is as a Mirror  - As a man thinketh in his heart; so is he  – We are at the ‘cause’ of the ‘effect’ –  Out of the heart flow the issues of life – “We don’t see things as they are; we see things as we are” Anais Nin

*   Resilience – Keep HOPE alive – tenacity to endure to the end – never give up on their vision

*   Presence – Living in the moment, present, authentic, transparent

*   Responsibility, Accountability, Vision, Wisdom, Contribute, Celebrate, Gratitude ETC. ETC. ETC.

And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count.
It's the life in your years.

Abraham Lincoln
